Product Description

This is the story of the war that changed the course of Spanish history. The struggle between the supporters and opponents of the Spanish Second Republic raged between 1936 and 1939. During the war, new names were written large in world history; names such as the International Brigade and the Nationalist General Franco, who led his side to ultimate victory.

Featuring fascinating archive film and location footage, plus dramatized "eyewitness" accounts, the DVD provides an intriguing account of a dark and divided period of Spanish history. This program also features photographs and interviews with surviving members of the International Brigade. Expert interpretation and analysis provides historical and political background to the war. Narrated by Michael Leighton.

Pro-Republican propaganda

Review by Old Grumbler, 2010-03-29

Despite having an official portrait of Generalissimo Franco on the cover, this supposedly "historical" narrative of the Spanish Civil War is an unmitigated apology for the Republican side in general, and the International Brigades in particular. The narrator even states - wrongly - that George Orwell was a member of the latter. Then he goes all gooey about the death of (yes, you've guessed it) Federico Garcia Lorca. Needless to say, this is not sound history but biased propaganda. Avoid and save money.

Good DVD

Review by Garrett Ronald Gillen, 2009-10-07

it focuses more on the international Brig & the Republican side. i enjoyed it & also there is a trivia test which i wish all info DVDs had.

Could not take it anymore after 10 minutes!

Review by Roberto Vitale, 2009-10-01

There is no political or strategic explanation for the war or events leading to it. Most annoying, the speaker is reading poetry instead of giving an objective account of such events. Apparently, the ideological nature of the war, which drew "intellectuals" and volunteers from many countries, is emphasized by this poetical bias. I want objective facts. I did no buy a literary work. I could not take it after 10 minutes, and I did not watch anymore.
